Corporate Volunteering

The mission of Gloucester Cathedral is to be “in tune with heaven and in touch with daily life”. Recent changes and improvements made through Project Pilgrim have brought even more events and activities for people, of all ages, backgrounds and faiths, to learn about, respond to and interact with the Cathedral. Some of these events take place off site and so the team usually take a portable three foot scale model of the Cathedral with them, so people get a glimpse of just how huge and stunning the building is. To look at its best this model needs lighting from below – could this be a challenge for your team to take on.

What's involved?

The scale model of the Cathedral is about three foot tall. It is self supporting and as it goes out and about to engage with the public off site it is robust and portable. It looks at its best when lit from below, but we are struggling to find a workable solution to allow this to happen. Any lighting solutions have to leave the model still portable, be robust enough to move around and can’t be complicated or long winded to set up. Some places we’ll be with the model will not have access to electricity either. While the lighting has to do the model justice, it can’t be too obtrusive or bulky – we need people to focus on the model and not the lighting itself.

We would ideally be looking for a team or person to work out the solution to our lighting problem, source the parts and lights we would need and fit them to the model.

If you would like to discuss this challenge further without committing yourself to it, please drop me an email at visits@gloucestercathedral.org.uk and I’d be happy to supply more information.

Why get involved?

Your help with lighting our model will help the Cathedral take its offer outside its immediate building and grounds to the wider community. It will also help us showcase ourselves at things like trade fairs where we can secure national and international recognition, helping fund the Cathedral for its more local work and mission. It’s also a golden opportunity to be part of the wider team that help make Gloucester Cathedral such a well loved and well visited place.

Our challenge provides scope for a drawing board to finished product project so might be useful for a team building or challenge for apprentices, interns or graduate placements. We like to celebrate those that give their time and skills to help us, so your company will certainly get a mention or two in our media as a big thank you for your efforts.
