Be Handy at the Redwell Centre

Together in Matson is based at the Redwell Community Centre right in the heart of Matson. Its local community face many challenges, but also have many talents, skills and ambition at their disposal. With support, nurturing and guidance these hidden strengths and talents can be unlocked to allow the community and individuals to blossom, achieve their aspirations and lead fulfilling healthy lives that make a positive difference to the world.

The Centre, like all buildings in regular public use, needs constant maintenance and repair. Often these jobs are small DIY or decoration type activities that people often tackle in their own home. Things like replacing door handles, fixing leaky taps, hanging notice boards, assembling flat pack furniture or repainting a wall often crop up and if we have to pay tradespeople to come in then it dwindles our money pot that we could be using for much better activities. We’d like to have a small team of handy volunteers that can come in as and when and tackle those jobs that they feel confident with and also suggest and work on their own projects to enhance the look and facilities at the Redwell Centre for its users.

What's involved?

We want people who are happy tackling small and basic decorating and DIY type situations. It would be impossible to list everything we might need you to do, but we regularly need people to do simple plumbing jobs such as mending leaky taps, simple fixing jobs such as changing door handles or realigning hinges, and simple maintenance tasks like painting fences or unblocking guttering. Occasionally we might get new flat pack furniture which needs assembling. We also need to keep our rooms decorated so they are bright and clean for those that use them, so painting of walls and woodwork also crops up. We wouldn’t ask anyone to tackle things they are not happy with so you would pick the projects you worked upon.

We are also very open to suggestions of things that could be done to improve our building, so if you wanted to make us a new set of coat hooks, or though it was high time we had some solid wooden storage boxes or better bespoke shelving we would be delighted to support you with those projects. We have a working shed at the back where you can undertake such projects and also meet up with like-minded people to chat to and share ideas with.

If you are a qualified plumber or electrician and would be willing to lend us your professional services for time to time on a volunteer basis we would be delighted to have your help with the bigger jobs such as maintaining our boiler or moving plug sockets and light fittings.

Why get involved?

We know that people with a passion and talent for DIY and decorating often enjoy practicing and sharing their skills, but if your house is in tip top condition there is only so much that you can do there. Well Together in Matson can offer you creative outlet and appreciative audience for your practical and creative abilities! Your work will help the Redwell Centre function safely and look better for those that use it. You will also be helping us save money by not having to always use trades-people and so we will be able to use the money saved for other community uses.

You’ll be able to take on creative woodworking and other projects in our shed and chat to and be in the company of others that share your passions and interests. It’s a very sociable role and we know for some of our volunteers it gives them the excuse and motivation to get out of the house to spend time with other people.

We also have a good supply of tea and biscuits!
