Soldiers of Gloucestershire Victorian Market 14th – 24th November

The Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum collects and displays artefacts and memorabilia of the county's regiments – The Gloucestershire Regiment and the Royal Gloucestershire Hussars. Some of your visitors are current service-people or veterans or those with particularly strong links and knowledge of the Gloucestershire’s, but we also get in lots of family groups and other visitors that are not at all familiar with military history, army life or indeed the story of our regiments.

During events such as the busy Victorian Christmas market we like to have a presence outside of the museum building. This brings our collections, services and gift shop items to a wider audience including people that may have previously though that the museum wouldn’t be something that they were interested in. It is therefore an important activity in widening our audiences, as well as bringing in some income for the museum with all the market shoppers on a Christmas gift buying mission. It is also good for us to have a strong presence in big events such as the market that happen on our dockside doorstep.

We also find that our café is busier during the market as people pop in for some tea and cake and a bit of a sit down away from the crowds. We are therefore looking for some volunteers to help us in the cafe so we can serve all the extra people.

What's involved?

We are intending to have a stall outside of the Museum for every day of the Christmas market period from Thursday 14th to Sunday 24th November. We need volunteers to help us man the stall from about 10am to 4pm each day. You would be helping set out and tidy away the merchandise and leaflets on the stall each day. You would be serving customers that wanted to buy our gift shop items, taking their money and giving change. You’d also be providing basic information about the Museum such as our opening times and the star items that can be seen. We would be able to brief you on this information before you helped at the stall so do not worry if you do not know it all already.

Most stall holders like to dress up in Victorian costume during the market to add to the wonderful atmosphere, so we will source for you a suitable costume so you look the part. It can be cold in the docks in November though, so we strongly recommend that you dress up warmly in layers that will go under your costume. A good thick soled pair of boots or stout shoes are also advised as you’ll be stood up quite a bit during the day. The stall will be near the museum though so there should be a steady stream of hot coffee and tea (and the odd biscuit) to help keep you going!

We are also looking for extra volunteers to help out in the café from about 10am – 4pm each day of the market. This would involve making and serving hot and cold drinks and pre packed biscuits, cakes and other snacks. You would be taking the money for these items and accurately giving change. There would also be an element of clearing the tables of used cups and plates and a bit of washing up. You might also need to replenish the stocks of cakes and biscuits throughout the day from our stockroom so our visitors can have a good selection to choose from.  The café will be warmer than outside so if you fancied helping during the market period but would prefer to be out of the cold the café might be a better place for you.

Why get involved?

This is a fantastic opportunity to gain and refine your customer service and cash handling skills in a busy, but very jolly environment. (The Victorian festivities and cheer are rather infectious!) You’ll meet and serve lots of different people from the local area and much wider afield. You’ll also help to promote the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum to a wider audience, so if you are interested in marketing and promotion this is again a great chance to gain practical experience. This could also be the start of a longer volunteering journey with the Soldiers of Gloucestershire Museum without committing yourself to a long term volunteering opportunity straight off.
