Regular Help

29th June – 21st September: Man the Moon!

Our big Summer exhibition is “The Moon”, running in our upstairs galleries from Saturday 29th June – Saturday 21st September. We are expecting it to be very popular and busy and so we need people to help look after the exhibition, so our visitors, many of which will be families over the school holidays, get as much as possible from the artefacts we are displaying, stories we are telling and the activities that are on offer. It won’t be just sitting in a corner – it’ll be a real chance to engage with the public, answer their questions and get involved with the exhibitions activities and trails.

What's involved?

This role involves lots of interaction with the public. You’ll be helping people find objects in the exhibition, complete the exhibition trails, explaining a little more about the installations and artefacts or indeed the Moon itself (we can help you find out what you need to know, so don’t be put off volunteering for us just because of gaps in your Moon or Space knowledge), as well as keeping the gallery clean and tidy. We have several hands on activities, so from time to time these will need a bit of a tidy and re-setting. We also need you to look after the actual visitors to the exhibition – keep an eye on pushchairs, re-direct the odd tot (or parent) that has wondered off back to their family and reunited people with their lost sun hats or brollies (weather dependent!)

Our museum opens Monday – Saturdays, 10am – 5pm, as well as occasionally on a Sunday or evening, so we'd be looking for our Moon exhibition volunteer stewards to do 2 – 3 hour shifts during these hours. You might want to sign up for regular slots each week, or come in for full days over a shorter period. Whatever volunteering pattern you are looking for we will do the best to accommodate it.

The Museum of Gloucester is keen that as many of its volunteering opportunities as possible are open to all. The public areas of the museum are fully accessible, with access to the top floor galleries by lift or wide stairs and we have accessible toilet facilities.

If you would like to informally discuss this volunteering role before committing to it, please contact Nigel, Museum Team Leader on 01452 396131 or by email

Why get involved?

If you enjoy talking to people and sharing your knowledge of science or history, or want a good opportunity to expand your knowledge this is a role for you! You’ll leave us with excellent customer service skills, the ability to cope with even the most unexpected science or historical question and a superb knowledge of the Moon and other space related topics. It is also a highly sociable role so great for meeting people and hopefully making some new friends.
