Blackfriars Welcomers

Blackfriars Priory is a stunning 13th century Medieval Priory nestled right at the very heart of Gloucester. It has a gorgeous Scriptorium, the oldest and most well preserved medieval library in Britain (possibly in Europe), a magnificent scissor-braced roof and beautiful private courtyard garden.

We host private and public events and activities throughout the year, but during the late Spring and Summer (until 30th September 2019) we are open to the public to just drop in on Sundays and Mondays between 10am – 3pm. We would like a small group of volunteers to help us welcome and direct those visitors, let them know about the private guided tours for groups they can book and tell them little bits about the fantastic history of Blackfriars. When we run events and activities we would also like volunteers to help us with all the setting that is required for them.

What's involved?

The Welcomer aspect of the volunteering would involve meeting and greeting people as they arrived, making sure they were aware of all the parts of the Priory they can go and look around and recommending guided tours to them so they can discover more. You’d also get to answer the visitor questions about Blackfriars, but don’t worry if you don’t feel quiet an expert on the site yet!  We would supply you with all the information you needed to answer common visitors questions. We’ll also arrange for you and other volunteers to get a guided tour of the Priory and its grounds from the Civic Trust, where you’ll get to hear all about its history and the important role it plays in Medieval and Tudor life in the city, as well as some of the important people that have lived and worked at it through the ages.

The venue assistance aspect of the volunteering role would be more ad hoc. The exact nature of what you would be doing would vary depending on the event, but it could involve setting out tables and chairs, cups and plates; helping put up marquees, arranging leaflets, pull ups and other promotional materials or directing stall holders to their pitch area. Some of these events and activities might take place outside of the normal Sundays and Monday Summer opening, but you’d be asked well in advance whether you were able to volunteer for them.

If you would like an informal chat about this volunteering opportunity without committing yourself please contact Holly on  Holly.Gooch@Gloucester.gov.uk  and she will get back in touch with you as soon as possible.

Why get involved?

Our Welcomer role is very social. You’ll be meeting with and talking to lots of new people. You’ll be practicing and strengthening customer service and communication skills in a relaxed environment and get to engage with a wide cross section of the public. These are core skills in many paid jobs and professions, so if gaining this experience to talk about in interviews and applications forms is something that it important to you, this a great and well supported volunteer role to do it in. You’ll also learn loads of interesting fact and stories about Blackfriars Priory itself and Gloucester’s wider history, great for anyone with an interest in local history, or simply to expand your knowledge.

Helping set up Blackfriars for public events and activities will give you a great insight into the logistical practicalities of running big events on a historical site. If you are looking for a career in events management or planning this is critical experience you will need. It is also a great opportunity to practice and develop teamworking skills, again a big plus if you need to talk about that in interviews or applications. It is also a sociable role as you’ll be working closely with other volunteers and the Blackfriars staff team.
