Diverse-City Art Extraordinaire

Diverse-City have put on a number of wearable art and fashion shows at Gloucester  Guildhall, but now would like to expand their offer to take advantage of an offer of a disused shop on Market Parade, Gloucester (a few doors down from Tescos) from this Summer. They would like to run a six week block of half day photography, fashion and wearable art, Art and design and other more general Art workshops for young people (aged 10 – 15 years) with learning difficulties from the shop ensuring that Art is truly accessible to all. It is intended to run courses two days a week and that participants would attend on the same half day for the duration of the six weeks long school holiday (22nd July – 1st September).

To make plans for these workshops a reality Diverse City need a team of enthusiastic volunteers who are confident in either fashion or wearable art, photography or other branches of art & design to help with the day to day running of the workshops.

What's involved?

Diverse City needs volunteers to help facilitate half day workshops that will take place over two days each week throughout the school summer holidays, on wearable art and fashion, photography, painting and sculpture.  The workshops will start week commencing 22nd July and run from one of the shops, a few doors down from Tescos along Market Parade. Volunteers will be needed to help participants access the Arts on offer, providing practical help and guidance where needed, as well as some one-to-one or small group tutorage. We would tailor the workshops on offer to reflect the skills and interests of your volunteers.

You need to be comfortable and confident in working with and in your chosen art form and able to demonstrate, break down, explain and pass on key techniques to participants who may have little or no experience of that art form before.  You’ll need to be calm, enthusiastic and encouraging, recognizing participant’s strengths and talents and tailoring your project to them. Some previous experience of working with groups of children or people with learning or physical disabilities may help you with this role, but equally we understand that everyone has to have a first day at everything, so if you are looking to gain experience in this field we are equally keen to hear from you.

We’d like to put on regular exhibitions and events throughout the Summer that celebrate the participants work, so there will also be opportunities to get involves with hanging and displaying and interpreting exhibitions, as well as planning, managing and stewarding events such as preview and opening evenings and open days. This could involve creating posters, advertising and marketing the events, identifying key VIP attendees and inviting them, as well as stewarding the events. You will also refine and practice exhibition skills such as hanging and displaying work.

Due to the fact that parents will be able to leave their children (if they wished) for the workshops, all volunteers would need to be DBS checked and due to the tight turn around for this project we are looking for you to have DBS before you start with us. You would also need to be at least 18 years of age and able to commit to at least one consistent half day slot on the same day each week.

Why get involved?

This is an excellent opportunity to refine and expand your artistic practice by sharing it with others. You’ll gain confidence and experience of explaining, demonstrating and assisting others to work with your artistic field, which will serve to strengthen your core artistic skills.  Many Artist through their career will do community and collaborative projects and this is a great opportunity to gain experience of that.

You will gain experience of working with, encouraging and developing the skills of children and young people, as well as those with learning or physical difficulties. If you are looking for a career working with children, or the public, previous experience of projects such as this would be invaluable.
