Feeling Creative?

Changing Creations’ weekly Wednesday “Feeling Creative” sessions run at St Michaels Hall in Tuffley. They provide Arts and Crafts opportunities to people that are recovering from or dealing with various health issues, are keen to meet new people and expand their social circle or simply would like to indulge their creative side in a friendly and supportive (and fun) group. Volunteers are needed to help set up and down the session and support those taking part to access the range of activities on offer. As well as the Wednesday sessions the group also runs the odd day trip out to places and other social events and activities that the volunteers would be welcome to get involved with. Changing Creations is sponsored and supported by Gloucester City Homes.

What's involved?

The Wednesday Arts and Crafts sessions run 10am – 12pm and 1pm – 3pm at St Michaels Hall, Robert Raikes Avenue, Tuffley, Gloucester, GL4 0EB. We need volunteers from about 9.30am to help with the set up of the activities. This might involve setting out paints, paper, craft supplies and other resources, popping chairs around tables and covering the tables with protective covers if the activity is going to be messy. Between the morning and afternoon sessions there is likely to be some topping up of resources. After the afternoon session has finished there will be a little bit of clearing away – putting away equipment and washing up of paint pots.

During the session our volunteers provide general support to the participants to help the access the crafts. This could range from keeping their water pots topped up, holding pieces of materials that need cutting, fetching resources for those that are less mobile or keeping everyone topped up with tea (Art is thirsty work!). Having a chat to the participants and offering supportive encouragement for the Arts and the other challenges that they may be facing is as important as the practical stuff. Most of all you don’t have to be Arty or have practical art knowledge to volunteer (although if you are we won’t exclude you) a passion for helping everyone engage with Arts and Crafts and express their creative side trumps any technical ability! Access to Arts and crafts, along with other creative outlets and company are important for lifting mood and improving mental and physical health and can even help with pain management, so it is important that everyone has an opportunity to access them. Our Wednesday Arts and Crafts volunteers are essential in helping us achieve that.

As well as the Wednesday sessions we also do the odd day trip out and social event for our participants and we’d love our volunteers to be involved with them too. Typically you’d be helping with getting scooters and other things on and off the coach, and providing company as we explore new places. We sometimes have fundraising events as well, from raffles to cake sales so help with them either on the day or in their planning is also much appreciated if you have an interest in that.

Why get involved?

This is a volunteering opportunity that really offers as much for the volunteers as they offer our participants. It’s a highly social role – chatting with our participants and really getting to know them is a big part of what we offer. You’ll make new friends and widen your own social circle. You’ll gain practical experience working with people from right across the community, especially those that face

disabling factors. This would therefore be great practical experience for anyone looking to go into paid jobs out in the community. You are also welcome to join in with the Arts and crafts so you can explore your creative side as well and you may pick up some new craft skills or techniques or even discover a new hobby. We’d love for people to do the full Wednesday with us, but of you could just commit half a day or just wanted to hep with sets ups and downs, or needed to be flexible to accommodate the school run we would still love to hear from you. Refreshments and a lunch if you stay with us for the whole Wednesday will be provided for you and of course if you come on a day trip your travel and admission tickets will also be covered.
