Gloucester FM is Gloucestershire’s longest running community radio station. It has an emphasis on local issues, information, advice and music that reflect our multi-cultural community. We endeavour to broadcast programmes that will empower listeners, either through the music played or the information provided. We broadcast from the Trust Centre in Conduit street, right in the heart of Gloucester and we are run by volunteers.
Not all of our volunteers broadcast though as it takes a team with many different talents to keep us running. We are currently looking for a volunteer Music Library Administrator to help catalogue all of the music tracks to help them be easily found and appropriately used for different shows.
Ideally we'd like our Music Library Administrator to come in for a few hours each week to work on cataloguing our musical collection onto computer. To do this successfully you’ll have to be confident in using computers and a database programme such as Excel. Most important ly though you’ll need an extensive knowledge of music of Black origin and feel confident about sub-categorising it. To do the cataloguing you’ll need to go through each music genre and make sure that the tracks have been allocated correctly. You’ll also have to input into a database the right information about each track, such as the singer or group, age and genre. You’ll also have to compile information for the Gloucester FM board so they can see what genres have the most tracks and which musical areas will need to be built up. We will give you help and guidance about exactly what information we need though to help you get started.
Why get involved?
This volunteering role will give you great hands on practical experience of cataloguing music and developing useful spreadsheets and databases to aid DJs and presenters put together their shows. It’ll also expose you to musicians and songs that you may not have come across before and widen your musical tastes and knowledge for your own pleasure. It is also a great chance to see the nuts and bolts of how a radio station works, which will be useful if you are looking for paid work in this field. We are a very friendly team and keen to welcome new people, so we would hope that you would also enjoy the social side of being with us.
Gloucester FM is committed to providing equality of opportunity; therefore we actively want to involve people from all ethnic backgrounds in our running.
