Regular Help

Go Girlguiding!

Girlguiding is the UK’s leading charity for girls and young women, and we are part of a worldwide movement with over 10 million members in 145 countries. We are proud to give girls and young women a space where they can be themselves, have fun, build brilliant friendships, gain valuable life skills and make a positive difference to their lives and their communities. We build girls’ confidence and raise their aspirations. We give them the chance to discover their full potential and encourage them to be a powerful force for good.

Girlguiding Gloucestershire has over 6,500 members, including over 5,000 young members and nearly 1,500 adult members and volunteers. However, we always need more volunteers to help run and support the groups, their meetings, events and activities.

We are seeking leaders and unit helpers aged 18 and older as well as young leaders aged 16 – 18. We need these leaders to help run our Rainbow groups (for girls aged 5 – 7), Brownies (for girls aged 7-10), Guides (for girls aged 10 – 14) and Rangers (for young women aged 14 – 18). As well as people willing to help out for a few hours each week for the term time weekly meetings and occasional weekend camps or other activities, we also need people to help out on a more occasional basis for specific activities.

What's involved?

The range of activities that our leaders and unit helpers get involved with is quite diverse. Generally the leaders plan and are the main facilitators for the weekly meetings, whilst the unit helpers assist with activities. At the weekly meetings you might find yourself preparing or assisting with craft or practical activities, helping your group make sense of the world around them and issues that they are facing, or helping the girls to develop skills for particular badges or challenges. The badges that the girls now work towards are diverse and cover a whole range of skills and interests from Archaeology to Construction, being a Conscientious Consumer to Crime Prevention, so whatever skills and experience you have and can bring to our meetings will be well used!

Girlguiding also do activities outside of their weekly meetings – the most well known of which being camps and sleep overs. However, many Girlguiding groups also run the odd day activity at weekends or in the holidays, or get involved in things in their local community such as litter picks, gardening or other charity work. We therefore need leaders and volunteers to help with these more occasional activities.

Girlguiding Gloucestershire is looking for volunteers for groups right across the county, so the chances are there will be a Girlguiding group on your doorstep that you can join.

As you would expect all our volunteers are DBS checked. However, you don’t have to have a DBS check before you apply to volunteer with us – we can help you sort that out. While some of our volunteers were Girlguiding members themselves it is not a requirement. We are a diverse and inclusive organisation and welcome members and volunteers from all sections of our community. While our members are all female we do welcome male volunteers.

Why get involved?

Volunteering with the Girlguiding Gloucestershire is a diverse and varied role. Whatever your contribution you can be assured that you are making a real difference to the girls and young women in your community. You’ll have the pleasure of watching them grow and develop in confidence, skills and knowledge as you help them make a positive contribution to their communities. You’ll also pick up skills from being involved with the different challenges and improve your communication and interpersonal skills along the way. If you are looking for a career in working with children and young people, Girlguiding is a friendly and informal way of gaining that experience.
