Friends of Hillfield Gardens are a small group of volunteer community gardeners who help to keep Hillfield Gardens at the top of London Road to the north of the city looking good. We meet on alternate Wednesdays from 2.00 - 3.30pm. We do some weeding, planting and pruning as well as having a cup of tea and a biscuit at the end of our session where people can relax and enjoy the Gardens. We provide hand tools and gloves, although of course people are more than welcome to bring their own. People of any ability or gardening experience are welcome to join us.
We also meet on the first Saturday of the month from 10.30am – 12.00, if people want to dedicate a little more time to our beautiful gardens. See our Saturday Hillfield Gardeners challenge in the Hour or Two volunteering opportunities section for more details about that.
We do basic garden maintenance to keep the gardens in tip-top condition. This includes weeding and pruning, along with planting at the right times of the year. The group is very mixed in terms of gardening experience and ability, so everyone is very welcome. We have basic hand tools and gloves for people to borrow, but of course you are more than welcome to bring your own. After the session we always have a hot drink and some biscuits and a good catch up with each other. It’s also a good chance to take a moment to really enjoy the gardens and the flowers, tree and plants that you’ve helped to look after.
We met every other alternate Wednesday from 2 – 3.30pm, as well as the first Saturday of the month. We understand that you might not be able to commit to every single session and we do have people that drop in every so often to lend a hand as a one off. All volunteers with whatever time you can give are very much valued.
Why get involved?
We think Hillfield Gardens is an important green space on the edge of the city centre. We like the fact that it gives nature and wildlife, such as bees, insects and squirrels have a foothold in an urban area and that we can also provide a tranquil, beautiful space for our human residents to enjoy and feel connected to nature in. By helping maintain the gardens you’ll certainly be contributing to all of that and helping keep the city that little bit more pretty looking.
We are a very friendly and welcoming group so it is a great way to meet new people and establish new friendships, particularly if you are new to the area. Gardening is also marvellous and free way to get some gentle exercise in the outdoors and if you don’t have a garden of your own at the moment it’s a great way to make sure you keep your fingers green. For those of us with a garden we often pick up ideas for planting schemes, or new pruning or planting techniques off each other that we use back at home.
