The Jet Age Museum celebrates Gloucestershire’s rich aviation heritage from the early days of flight, through the birth of the Jet Age to the present day. It is staffed and run entirely by volunteers and is a great team to join. Their Jet & Whittle café is always busy (it does great cakes and coffee!) and is a great source of income to this free entry museum and so they are looking to expand the number of volunteers that are up for doing shifts in there.
Our café staff have to happy serving and dealing with customers and able to work in a busy, but very friendly environment and accurately handle cash. You’ll get full training on how the till works, so don’t worry if you’ve never done that sort of thing before.
The café serves hot and cold drinks, a particularly scrumptious range of cakes, ice creams and lollies. The Jet Age Museum opens 10am – 4pm Saturdays and Sundays and also on Wednesdays during the Gloucestershire school holidays. The café is open until 3.30pm to give the last customers a chance to finish their tea before we close.
The day is split into two shifts – Mornings, 10am – 1pm and afternoons 1 – 4pm and most volunteers come in for a shift about four times a month, although there is some scope for less or more shifts if that suits you. The Museum runs an online rota system so you’ll be able to book in to do the shifts that suit you, meaning that you are not necessarily tied to exactly the same shift each week.
The café volunteers prepare and serve the hot drinks and ice creams and also serve the pre-made cakes, cold drinks and lollies. They take the money or card payments and ring them through the till, giving change as required. One of the café volunteers will also set up the change in the till at the start of the day and cash it up and hand the takings over for safe storage at the end of the shift. We have a particular procedure for this that we will show you. Our cafe volunteers also do the washing and drying of crockery and cutlery, replenish the food and plates, and also clear and wipe down the tables as needed.
We need our volunteers to be aged at least 14 years. Anyone aged 14 – 18 will need to get their parent/ guardian to sign a permission slip. Anyone over 18 can sign for themselves!
The museum is on one level, but if you do have any mobility concerns please do discuss them over with us and we will do our best to make any adjustments needed to fully accommodate you in your volunteering.
If you’d like any more information without making a commitment then please do not hesitate to contact our volunteer co-ordinator Ralph Light on firstname.lastname@example.org
Why get involved?
This is a great opportunity to improve and practice your customer service skills, food handling and cash handling skills, all in a busy but very friendly and extremely well supported environment. This is a very sociable role, so you’ll meet and talk to lots of people. You’ll also be amongst the first people to find out about new exhibitions, events and activities that are being planned at the museum.
