The Jet Age Museum celebrates Gloucestershire’s rich aviation heritage from the early days of flight, through the birth of the Jet Age to the present day. It is staffed and run entirely by volunteers and is a great team to join. Many of the volunteers there are aircraft enthusiasts and have previous knowledge or experience of the aviation world. However, other volunteers don’t have that background and still make a strong and valid contribution to the museum, so don’t feel that you have to be an aircraft expert to be part of our maintenance team that look after the building and the grounds.
The Jet Age Museum opens 10am – 4pm Saturdays and Sundays and also on Wednesdays during the Gloucestershire school holidays. However, our general maintenance team meets on a Friday so they can get jobs out of the way without the public getting under their feet. Between the team they look after the building and the grounds of the Museum. Tasks can involve things like painting and decorating to more DIY tasks such as fixing leaky taps, re-hanging doors, as well as grounds keeping duties from gritting paths in winter to undergrowth clearance if it starts to encroach on areas it shouldn’t to ensuring our exterior is watertight and weatherproof.
Our general maintenance volunteers do need general DIY and decorating type knowledge and skills, but we work very much as a team and do not expect everyone to be confidence and experienced in everything. There is plenty of opportunities to pick up skills and learn from each other.
We need our volunteers to be aged at least 14 years. Anyone aged 14 – 18 will need to get their parent/ guardian to sign a permission slip. Anyone over 18 can sign for themselves!
The museum is on one level, but if you do have any mobility concerns please do discuss them over with us and we will do our best to make any adjustments needed to fully accommodate you in your volunteering.
If you’d like any more information without making a commitment then please do not hesitate to contact our volunteer co-ordinator Ralph Light on email@example.com
Why get involved?
Volunteering for our maintenance team is a great opportunity to practice your practical DIY, decorating and grounds keeping on a scale that is just not possible at home. You’ll get to share your skills and knowledge with others in the team, as well as learn new things yourself and know that your hard work is being appreciated by the thousands of visitors that come to the museum each year.
Our team is very sociable so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to meet other people and make friends. You’ll also be amongst the first people to find out about new exhibitions, events and activities that are being planned at the museum and be part of them.
