Together in Matson is based at the Redwell Community Centre right in the heart of Matson. Its local community face many challenges, but also have many talents, skills and ambition at their disposal. With support, nurturing and guidance these hidden strengths and talents can be unlocked to allow the community and individuals to blossom, achieve their aspirations and lead fulfilling healthy lives that make a positive difference to the world.
Many of our young people only access sport at school in formal PE lessons (and while sport and fitness at school can lead to some people trying out sports they would have otherwise not considered, it can be a bit uninspiring for others.) We all know that regular exercise, whether that is participation in sport, activities such as Zumba or Pilates or a dance around the living room, is important to good physical health and plays a strong role in supporting robust mental health. We would therefore like volunteers who can coach and lead our young people in different sports and movement based activities. We are especially keen to encourage girls and young women to find an activity (or a two) that they feel positive about participating in.
We are looking for people who are confident in coaching and leading different sports and physical activities for young people. We have large hall spaces for indoor activities and can help you find a suitable outdoor space for those requiring outside pitches or space. We don’t mind what the sport or activity is, but if it is something that requires a lot of equipment we are going to need you to be able to source that equipment with us. We would also be delighted to support you if you are bringing team sports to us, to help with finding opponents and organising matches.
Ideally if your activity is well received by our young people we’d like you to be able to provide regular sessions after school or at a weekend. These would be arranged at a mutually convenient time for you, the centre (if you need to use one of our rooms) and the young people that are interested. However, if you are just able to provide a few taster sessions to wet people’s appetites, we would be interested in that as well.
You’ll need to be confident and inventive in the way that you inspire and motivate the young people you are working with. It is not about producing the next Olympic athlete (although we are all for cheering on our local lad or lass at Beijing!), but rather about helping people to find their own level in a physical activity that they enjoy. All our sports and activities are inclusive and as we work in the same building as Glo-Active we have access to professionals that can help you ensure that your activities are as inclusive as possible for all participants. We are also keen that our girls and young women are particularly encouraged to take part in the sports and activities.
Due to the nature of the role we would need you to hold a DBS. However, we can help you put together the correct paperwork to apply for this if you do not hold one at the moment. We would also like you to have some first aid training, again we can help you find suitable courses if you do not already hold this.
Why get involved?
We think this would be a great opportunity for a student or other individual pursuing Sports or Coaching qualifications, to allow them to gain more experience with groups of young people of mixed physical abilities. However, we are equally interested in having established sports and fitness professional work with us, or those with enthusiasm and more informal experience in the field.
We are open to any sports of physical activities being showcased with our young people so whatever your sporting passion we’d be delighted to work with you. You could be the person that introduces a young person to a sport that they love and that has a real positive impact throughout the rest of their lives. You’ll practice and build upon your communication, people management, negotiation and planning skills as well as developing strategies to cope with evolving situations and ones that do not go exactly to plan.
We are reasonably flexible about when you could offer your activity, so you could fit it around other work, training, family life or studying commitments.
The link between physical activity and good physical and mental health is well established, so your volunteering will have a real impact on the whole wellbeing of the young people you work with.
