Regular Help

Support at the Cavern

The Cavern, College Street runs a drop in mental health support service each evening between 6pm – 11pm for people aged over 18. Anyone needing a friendly ear to listen to them or a non-judgmental friend to talk to and spend time with can come in for support. We also offer low level interventions such as adult colouring, board games and inclusive activities such as quiz nights.

We need volunteers to work alongside paid staff to make sure that everyone who comes in can get the attention they need. Many, but not all, of our users are young adults who feel they have nowhere else to turn. We help people feel less isolated, cope with anxiety, meet new people and provide support at a time of day when little low level or early intervention support is available from the statutory services. We are funded by Gloucestershire Clinical Commissioning Group for this service and we work closely with the wide range of statutory mental health services to ensure a joined up approach.

The Cavern is part of Treasure Seekers. Here at Treasure Seekers we believe that every single person has something to give to the community. We also believe that when someone is in a nurturing community they can grow and develop to become the best version of themselves. All of our volunteering opportunities are fully supported to help you be part of something bigger, grow and develop your skills and grow in confidence.

We positively welcome all people in our community as volunteers at the Cavern and Treasure Seekers. If you would like an informal chat about this volunteering opportuunity please email sarah.baker@kftseekers.org.uk

What's involved?

You do not need previous experience with mental health support to volunteer for this position. You will be fully supported at all times by professional staff and receive a detailed induction and ongoing training. You will need a friendly, patient and caring manner and be able to empathise with the people you meet.

Every person using our drop in service is different. Some just need a friendly patience ear that will listen to them and not judge. Others need to be somewhere they can feel safe. You may spend time playing board games with others or just being close at hand while they use the adult colouring books. Some people may want a lot of interaction with you, others may just need to know someone is there but not want to engage. We have regular users and others that will just drop in more infrequently or as a one off.

We run our drop in service every night of the year 6pm – 11pm. Ideally we’d like volunteers to do one full night each week, however, we can accommodate volunteers that are only able to give up a few hours for the evening.

Why get involved?

Our mental health support service helps people feel less isolated, cope with anxiety, meet new people and provide support at a time of day when little low level or early intervention support is available from the statutory services. It is a vital service for the people that use it and provides immeasurable support when it is needed most. Your volunteering will make a real difference to people in your community.

If you are looking for experience in listening or mental health services to take to a future career, this volunteering position can provide that opportunity in a supported environment.
