The Discover DeCrypt project has transformed St Mary de Crypt Church and the Old Crypt Schoolroom into welcoming and accessible buildings in the heart of Gloucester, for all to enjoy. Visitors can experience the rich architectural and social heritage of the building, which is very much a community centre, cultural hub and heritage attraction. There are opportunities for learning through tours, talks and events, and school visits. Regular events, from concerts and arts courses to being a space for training and meetings are hosted in the building. This is all happening alongside the continued use of the church as a place of worship and prayer.
We are building up a small book library as another community asset and so need a volunteer to help run and promote it so it functions as well as possible.
We’d ideally like someone to come in once a week or fortnight to manage the library. We’d like all the books cataloguing and categorising so we can keep track of what we have and also develop and administrate a loans system so the public and groups (such as churches running messy church sessions) can borrow them and we can get them back. It would also be much appreciated if you’d be willing to chase up any late returners as part of this role. You’ll also look after anyone that wants to use the library, helping them find appropriate books if needed.
The library is a new initiative for us, so we would like you to be able to do a bit of marketing and promotion of the library for us, mainly through our website. We’ve got ideas like having a top 10 of books for adults and children to borrow, but we are very open to other ideas.
The Church and old schoolrooms are open Wednesday – Sunday, 10am – 5pm in the Summer and the same days 12 – 4pm in the Winter, so we’d like your weekly/ fortnightly day to be during our usual opening times.
If you wanted to chat anything over before committing yourself to this role than please do email either Jess on firstname.lastname@example.org or Hellen on email@example.com
Why get involved?
This is a fantastic opportunity to gain and/or practice librarian and cataloguing skills, as well as do a little bit of marketing and customer service. You’ll be well supported in your volunteering and also given the opportunity to direct your time and skills to develop the library as you feel best. This could be a really lovely volunteering role for someone studying librarianship and wanting to gain practical experience , as well as someone further on, or with a former career in this area that would like to take on this challenge.
It is a very sociable role – we have a wonderful and enthusiastic group of volunteers in the church that are really keen to welcome new volunteers to the team. (The three part-time staff are not bad either.)
Just as we welcome all to visit our Church and Old Schoolrooms we also welcome all who wish to volunteer with us.
