Regular Help

Discover Decrypt - Volunteer Retail merchandiser

The Discover DeCrypt project has transformed St Mary de Crypt Church and the Old Crypt Schoolroom into welcoming and accessible buildings in the heart of Gloucester, for all to enjoy. Visitors can experience the rich architectural and social heritage of the building, which is very much a community centre, cultural hub and heritage attraction. There are opportunities for learning through tours, talks and events, and school visits. Regular events, from concerts and arts courses to being a space for training and meetings are hosted in the building. This is all happening alongside the continued use of the church as a place of worship and prayer.

We would like a volunteer retail merchandiser to help us grow and improve our shop and therefore help us boost our income to do more community activities and events as well as look after the buildings themselves. We’d like help with stock selection and control, suppliers, displaying, pricing and more day to day activities.

What's involved?

We’d really appreciate our volunteer merchandiser to be involved with the whole shop experience. We’d like help with stock purchasing and stock control, to ensure that we buy in the lines that our visitors are likely to buy. This will also include researching and contacting new suppliers and hopefully negotiating us some good deals. We will do an annual stock take which we would like your involvement in too.  The visual displaying of stock is also important for us, so we would like help with that as well, as well as ensuring that the stock is kept tidy, ordered and clean and displayed to the public. We’d also like you to be involved in clear pricing and labelling fo the stock.

Ideally we’d like you to come in once a week or fortnight so the shop has regular attention. The Church and old schoolrooms are open Wednesday – Sunday, 10am – 5pm in the Summer and the same days 12 – 4pm in the Winter, so we’d like your weekly/ fortnightly  day to be during our usual opening times.

If you wanted to chat anything over before committing yourself to this role than please do email Hellen  on  hellen.oconnor@discoverdecrypt.org.uk

Why get involved?

This is a fantastic opportunity to gain and/or practice core retail and merchandising skills, along with a little bit of marketing and customer service, in a well supported environment. You’ll have scope to try out ideas and apply your own creative flare to the stock in the way it is displayed and indeed what is stocked. The shop income helps us run community events and activities as well as look after our historic buildings.

This could be a really lovely volunteering role for someone studying retail and merchandising and wanting to gain practical experience , as well as someone further on, or with former experience or passion for this area, that would like to take on this challenge.

Volunteering at deCrypt is a very sociable experience - we have a wonderful and enthusiastic group of volunteers in the church, along with three part time staff, that are really keen to welcome new volunteers to the team.

Just as we welcome all to visit our Church and Old Schoolrooms we also welcome all who wish to volunteer with us.

How to get involved?

  1. Sign into your account or sign up to Volunteer Makers.
  2. Accept the challenge
  3. Wait for a reply from the Discover DeCrypt team
