Youth Clubers Unite!

Together in Matson is based at the Redwell Community Centre right in the heart of Matson. Its local community face many challenges, but also have many talents, skills and ambition at their disposal. With support, nurturing and guidance these hidden strengths and talents can be unlocked to allow the community and individuals to blossom, achieve their aspirations and lead fulfilling healthy lives that make a positive difference to the world.

During the week we run a series of well attended youth clubs for local residents. We offer sports, team activities, music, a cinema room, the chance to play pool or play music, as well as the opportunity to get together with friends in a safe sheltered environments or find a friendly adult listening ear that won’t judge or condemn, but will try to help and support. We need adults to help run these youth club evenings.

What's involved?

We run three different youth groups, according to age. Our 8 – 11 years olds meet on a Thursday evening from 6 – 7.30pm. Our 12 – 15 year olds meet on Mondays 6 – 8pm, whilst our senior youth group of those aged 15 and over meet 8 – 10pm on Mondays.  We need volunteers for all of these groups, but don’t expect you to volunteer to help out at all of them.

Exact tasks will vary from week to week, but typically our youth club volunteers help with setting out and clearing away of arts and crafts activities and games. You’ll encourage participation and referee team games and sports and often pitch in as part of those team activities. You’ll be a friendly, non judgemental but supportive ear for youngsters that need to talk, or who are looking for reassurance and encouragement. You’ll be given support, guidance and safeguarding training to help with this aspect of your volunteering role. If you don’t already hold a DBS certificate we will help you apply for it as this will be essential given the nature of this role.

Why get involved?

The impact of a friendly positive adult role model, who choses (rather than is paid) to spend time with a young person cannot be under estimated. You may act as a role model, a friendly non judgemental ear or the person that finally show them how to pot with more accuracy in pool. You’ll encourage and support our youth club members as they negotiate this pivotal time in their life.

You’ll gain hands on experience working with young people in an informal setting. You’ll strengthen your communication and negotiation skills as well as developing planning and project management skills, flexibility and resilience that would stand you in good stead for a huge range of future careers. Equally if you are looking to volunteering as part of a post-paid employment time in your life, it is a great opportunity to firmly embed yourself in the life of the local community and share the wisdom and experiences of your working life to help others as they prepare to start on theirs.
